C’est un chef-d’oeuvre de la littérature romande. Une suite de saynètes tranquillement horribles qui se déroulent à la campagne, en temps de guerre.

Abandonnés à eux-mêmes, à la faim et au froid, deux jeunes enfants – des frères jumeaux – vont tenter de vaincre, à travers l’exercice journalier de la douleur reçue ou infligée, tout ce qui fait mal, et vont consigner dans un « grand cahier » la liste de leurs progrès.

Seul en scène, Valentin Rossier livre le quotidien cruel de cet étrange duo, pris dans le chaos d’un monde en déficit d’humanité, et porte le texte de Agota Kristof avec émotion, force et subtilité.
