Oreste aime Hermione, qui aime Pyrrhus, qui aime Andromaque, qui n’aime qu’Hector, son époux mort sur le champ de bataille : telle est la trame passionnelle de la tragédie de Racine, une cascade d’amours impossibles chauffées à leur plus haut degré d’incandescence destructrice.

On en oublierait presque la toile de fond, celle de la guerre de Troie, dont Pyrrhus sort vainqueur et Andromaque captive. L’amour – fou – emporte des êtres déjà dévastés par la guerre et ses traumatismes.

Dans Andromaque, dit Stéphane Braunschweig, ce n’est pas l’amour, c’est la guerre qui rend fou. Cette guerre (de Troie) qui est la folie même et que l’amour pourrait panser – s’il n’était pas lui-même à l’image de la guerre.
